College of Business
Major Opportunities for Giving
College of Business Career Center and Internship Fund
We have created a College of Business Career Center to serve graduate and undergraduate students. Among many other things, the Center will be responsible for guiding and preparing students with their career choices, providing job and internship hiring opportunities, and assisting businesses with their short- and long-term employment needs.
Professional Development and Leadership Program Fund
We are developing a series of one-credit-hour courses that each student will be required to take each semester they are enrolled in the College. These courses will introduce students to the notions of what it means to be a professional and a leader and how to act and interact in a business and social environment. Although the curriculum has not yet been finalized, topics will range from the correct fork to use at a formal dinner to how to think and act as a professional to understanding the responsibilities implicit in the leadership roles our graduates will assume. The curriculum will be heavily infused with outside speakers and facilitators from the local, regional, and national business communities.
Undergraduate and Graduate Scholarships
We always have a need for student scholarships to aid highly gifted students and those with financial need. Annually, we provide about $60,000 through 40 scholarships. Our students have always expressed deep appreciation for the assistance they have been provided. However, with over 1,300 students in the College of Business, we have significant unmet scholarship need. We seek to triple our scholarship numbers and dollars through endowments or annual gifts. Scholarships are an excellent way to honor a loved one, support a particular academic program, or help those whose financial ability to get an education is just beyond their reach. Scholarships make a tremendous positive difference in the lives of our students. They are, literally, the gift that keeps on giving for decades into the future.
Opportunity Funds
The Endowment for Excellence is a pool of opportunity funding that is used to advance the goals of the College. It is the category of funding that is often the most difficult to raise, yet over and over again makes the most difference to the most people. We can never anticipate every contingency that may arise. Yet, we need to be ready. We need to support the academically excellent single parent who is literally down to their last dollar and needs $100 to pay the utility bill. We need to provide research support to the faculty member who wants to collaborate on IT research with the Brody School of Medicine that will help patients receive better, more-timely, and safer care. We need to support student teams that consult with businesses to help those businesses succeed and prosper and to provide our students with hands-on experience. Fundamentally, we need to encourage students, faculty, and staff to dream big and then we need to support their dreams.
