Placement Tests

Math

Math is required to graduate.  Consult check sheet to see which specific math course is required for your particular major.  Consult the Math department website for important information such as math placement criteria, sample placement test, and upcoming test dates.

Students who need to take the test should plan on arriving at least 10 minutes early (seating is limited) and should bring a picture ID, Banner ID, a number 2 pencil and a non-programmable calculator.  Pre-registration is not required.  For questions, contact the math department at 252-328-4111.

Foreign Language

ECU offers a variety of foreign languages including French, Spanish, German, Latin, Greek, and Russian.

Students who plan on taking Spanish MUST take the placement test online—even to start with the first level (1001) Go to the Foreign language department website—one ECU’s homepage under the index.  Students will receive score instantly, though it will take 2-3 business days to be entered into the system (This means students will not be able to register immediately after finishing the test.)

Students who plan on taking French or German can either start with the first level (1001) or can take the placement test online as well.  Go to the Foreign Language department website—one ECU’s homepage under the index.  Students will receive score instantly, though it will take 2-3 business days to be entered into the system (This means students will not be able to register immediately after finishing the test.)

Other languages (Latin, Greek, Russian) do not require a placement test; students can start with the first level (1001).  Students with some background in these languages who would like to take place in a level higher than 1001 should contact the foreign language department directly at 252-328-6232.

*Note, for ALL of the languages students can drop 1 level below your placement score.  For example, students who place into level 1003 may choose to take either 1003 or take 1002.  (Students will receive credit for all when the course is successfully completed.)

Consult the Foreign Language department website for important information such as study abroad opportunities, tutoring, internships, scholarships, etc.
