2008 winner of the ASA’s Public Understanding of Sociology Award, Dr. Shirley Laska has been a prolific scholar of environ-mental and disaster studies.
Details:
Before Hurricane Katrina Dr. Laska’s work drew attention to the risks which New Orleans would face in the event of a major hurri-cane. Her work has helped the public and policymakers to understand the impacts of disasters are socially constructed, unequal, and can and should be mitigated.
