The NSARC follows and organic and dynamic approach to community work through research and program implementation. Four core activities constitute this approach:
1. Research. Activities that enhance the understanding of the local, regional, and transnational Latino communities of eastern North Carolina through the study of key social, cultural, political, and economic issues. Also, studies that help develop strategies and methodologies that strengthen the community and improve the delivery of services.
2. Volunteering and Service-learning. The NSARC involves university students with grassroots and service providers serving the Latino community. Students are engaged in general support activities, guided research, or anything else agreed upon between the student, the organization, and the university. Student involvement in the community is be supported by the ECU Volunteering and Service-Learning Center.
3. Implementation of Solutions. Activities aimed at implementing solutions to issues and social problems identified by the collaborative. For example, a youth leadership program, a lay health advisor project, or a mentoring program.
4. Advocacy. The Collaborative engages in public debates around critical issues affecting the Latino community, such as immigration, health disparities, political participation, and access to education.
