GREENVILLE, N.C. (Nov. 18, 2013) — A former East Carolina University professor and chair of the Department of Physics, Dr. Carl G. Adler, Jr., 74, died Sunday, November 17, 2013, at the Vidant Inpatient Hospice of Greenville.
A memorial service will be conducted Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church.
Adler, son of the late Carl G. and Mary Elizabeth McGarry Adler, was born on October 3, 1939, in Buffalo, NY. He graduated from high school in Pt. Pleasant, WV, and went on to attend the University of Notre Dame, where he received both a Bachelor of Science and a PhD in physics. He joined the faculty of ECU in 1965, and after 34 years of teaching and serving for several years as chair of the Department of Physics, retired in 1999.
In his free time, Adler was an avid sailor, who enjoyed writing about his boating adventures, and was a voracious reader and a computer junkie. His favorite times were spent with friends and family.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Catherine (Kay) Adler; son, Christopher Adler of Greenville; daughter, Dawn Harden and husband, Graham, of Cincinnati; grandchildren, Kendall, Lindsay and Cole Harden all of Cincinnati; brother, Gary Adler and wife, Catherine, of Centerville, OH; and devoted nieces and nephews, Kelly Bohrer, Anne Marie Adler, Gary Adler, Jr. and their spouses and children.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Service League of Greenville Inpatient Hospice, 920 Wellness Drive, Greenville, NC 27834.
