4+1 Biology MBA students combine
undergraduate business classes with 5000-level biology electives. Qualified
students can earn an MBA with just 11 extra classes taken in one additional
The 4+1 Biology MBA degree option is
designed specifically for ECU undergraduate biology majors. There is no minimum
work experience requirement. The 4+1 Biology MBA curriculum consists of a
maximum of 18 classes, but may be reduced to as few as 11 depending on your
undergraduate coursework. The MBA course work is divided into two groups of
The first group of seven classes is the
foundations component, which gives a non-business undergraduate student the
knowledge base needed to be successful in the program. These courses may be
waived if you have taken the coursework at the undergraduate level and received
an A or B. With the 4+1 Biology MBA program, undergraduate biology majors
typically take enough undergraduate business classes to waive four of the seven
graduate foundations classes. If you do not take some of the business courses
with your biology undergraduate program, the corresponding graduate course will
become part of the MBA program.
The second group of eleven classes is the
common body of knowledge component and is required of all students. There are eight
required breadth classes and three required breadth electives. 4+1 Biology MBA
students take three 5000-level biology electives during their undergraduate
program that dual count satisfying biology elective requirements and the MBA
elective requirement. Optional certificate classes for specific industries are
Most MBA foundations classes and all
common body of knowledge classes are offered both online and face-to-face each
fall and spring semester. Courses are also available during summer sessions.
Online classes do not require campus visits and may be completed from anywhere
in the world.
Although the MBA classes may be completed
in as little as one year, you also have the option to set your own pace
throughout the program – taking between one to five classes each semester. The
number of classes you take each semester can change to suit your schedule; you
can even take a semester or more off if needed. Students who are working
full-time typically take two classes each fall and spring semester, and one
class each of the two summer sessions. You may take the courses in any order,
provided you meet the prerequisites.
Acceptance is dependent upon, but not
limited to, earning at least 950 points based on the formula: (200 x GPA) +
GMAT ≥ 950, with a minimum GMAT score of 450. You should plan to take the GMAT
exam in the summer between your junior and senior year.
