4 + 1 BS Biology MBA
The 4+1 Biology MBA degree at East Carolina University offers ECU undergraduate biology majors the opportunity to build business skills upon a science foundation. The program can be completed in as little as five years, featuring unparalleled quality, flexibility, and customization – plus personalized support in advising and career placement.
Future leaders within biotech and medicine will be expected to command a comprehensive understanding of science as well as the fundamentals of business. Our program offers individuals interested in these industries the tools to excel as leaders throughout their careers.
4+1 Biology MBA students combine undergraduate business classes with 5000-level biology electives. Qualified students can earn an MBA with just 10 extra classes taken in one additional year. At the end of five years, students will earn both an undergraduate degree in biology plus an MBA.
The 4+1 Biology MBA degree option is designed specifically for ECU undergraduate biology majors. There is no minimum work experience requirement. The 4+1 Biology MBA curriculum consists of a maximum of 20 classes, but may be reduced to as few as 10 depending on your undergraduate coursework. The MBA course work is divided into two groups of 10 classes.
The first group of 10 classes is the core component, which gives a non-business undergraduate student the knowledge base needed to be successful in the program. These courses may be waived if you have taken the coursework at the undergraduate level and received an A or B. With the 4+1 Biology MBA program, undergraduate biology majors typically take enough undergraduate business classes to waive seven of the 10 graduate core classes. If you do not take some of the business courses with your biology undergraduate program, the corresponding graduate course will become part of the MBA program.
The second group of ten classes is the graduate breadth component and is required of all students. There are seven required breadth classes and three required breadth electives. 4+1 Biology MBA students take three 5000-level biology electives during their undergraduate program that dual count satisfying biology elective requirements and the MBA elective requirement. Optional certificate classes for specific industries are also available.
All MBA core classes and breadth classes are offered both online and face-to-face each fall and spring semester. Courses are also available during summer sessions. Online classes do not require campus visits and may be completed from anywhere in the world.
Although the MBA classes may be completed in as little as one year, you also have the option to set your own pace throughout the program – taking between one to five classes each semester. The number of classes you take each semester can change to suit your schedule; you can even take a semester or more off if needed. Students who are working full-time typically take two classes each fall and spring semester, and one class each of the two summer sessions. You may take the courses in any order, provided you meet the prerequisites.
Acceptance is dependent upon, but not limited to, earning at least 950 points based on the formula: (200 x GPA) + GMAT ≥ 950, with a minimum GMAT score of 500. If your GPA is 3.5 or greater, the minimum GMAT score required is 450. You should plan to take the GMAT exam in the summer between your junior and senior year.
