Welcome to the Department of Chemistry at East Carolina University! The Department of Chemistry offers the BS and BA degrees at the undergraduate level and the MS at the graduate level. The BS degree is certified by the American Chemical Society. Additionally, through our participation in the Interdisciplinary Doctoral Program in the Biological Sciences, the department offers a Chemistry concentration. Find out more about our department by reading our vision and mission statements. Information on the programs, courses, facilities and people associated with the Chemistry Department may be found on the links to the left.

Will give a talk on:
Light-Sensitive Chemical Tools for Controlling Cell Behavior
Abstract:
Which biochemical pathways are responsible for the aberrant behavior of cancer cells? What can organic chemists do to identify new targets for cancer chemotherapy? This talk will provide a brief introduction to the history of the causes and treatment of cancer. Cancer is a dynamic phenomenon and therefore unconventional strategies are required to decipher the biochemical pathways that drive cell division and migration. Light, in combination with light-responsive compounds, is used to relate intracellular protein activity with aberrant cell behavior.
