Chemistry 5526: Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) for Analytical Chemists

The Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) regulations required by FDA impose extremely strict regiments of control, validation, procedure, and documentation on both production and supporting laboratory activities in companies that develop and produce pharmaceuticals for human consumption. The lectures and laboratory exercises presented during this course provide an overview of the GMPs and their application to modern analytical techniques. Students gain a familiarity with techniques such as UV, HPLC, and GC analysis of pharmaceutical samples, raw materials testing, and dissolution analysis. Upon completion of this course, students possess a basic understanding of GMP procedures and protocols. This training can be applied in current or future employment opportunities in the pharmaceutical industry.

Initial funding for this class was made possible with grants obtained from The Golden Leaf Foundation and North Carolina Biotechnology Center. A dedicated laboratory is housed in Room SZ-348 within the Chemistry Department. Guest speakers are provided from local pharmaceutical companies Metrics, Inc. and DSM Pharmaceuticals, Inc. The class is limited to ten students. Successful completion of Chemistry 2250 and 2251, Quantitative and Instrumental Analysis, is a pre-requisite for the class.

Further information can be obtained by contacting the Chemistry Department or Bill Tilghman, Regulatory Affairs Manager at Metrics, Inc. at wat@metricsinc.com.
