Agenda Item 0. Welcome of new members and announcements

Welcome of new member Megan Perry, from the Dept. of Anthropology and student member Thomas Taylor. Prof. Stevens reminded faculty of open house upcoming on Nov. 10; that we are preparing for a new brochure this year; that current offering info is available on the website; and gave a status report on the Classics foundation account.

Agenda Item 1. Speakers

Prof. Perry reminded the committee of the upcoming lecture by Traianos Gagos on the analysis of Byzantine era carbonized papyri from Petra. Profs. Papalas and Romer gave updates on their communications with additional speakers.

Agenda Item 2. Curriculum

Prof. Stevens reported that with some difficulty, the Classics revisions of the minor and additions of CLAS 2600, CLAS 3600, CLAS 3700, GRK 3330, GRK 3700, GRK 4001, GRK 4002, LATN 3330 and LATN 3700 should now have been approved by UCC after some last minute revisions. CLAS 2000 and CLAS 4000 were awarded writing intensive credit by the WAC committee, but the request for the composition courses to carry it (GRK 3330, LATN 3330) was withdrawn when WAC requested time to study the issue further. Prof. Romer reported on the redesign of CLAS 2000 as a broad introduction to the various fields of classics, and on his plans for CLAS 4000 on Roman North Africa for spring 2008.

Agenda Item 3. Student Theses

The committee heard a progress report from Thomas Taylor (on Cybele) and discussed the projects of other students now under way.

Agenda Item 4. Majors and Minors

Prof. Stevens reported that the program now has 14 majors, 6 in Classics and 8 in Classical Civ. of whom 12 are active. The program has 9 minors.

Agenda Item 5. Other Business

There was discussion of the library budget for the program and an invitation for priorities. There was discussion of the possibility of forming an AIA society, though it seemed at present the difficulties might weigh against it. There was discussion of the possibility of a new colleague for the spring semester and of modifications to the spring offerings.
