Department Journals and Scholarly/Community Engagement Projects

The Department of English is home to three award-winning journals and several scholarly and community engagement projects.
Explorations in Renaissance Culture is a biannual, multidisciplinary scholarly journal devoted to all disciplines of study in the Early Modern/Renaissance period: literature, history, art and iconography, music, cultural studies, etc. Publishing articles in the English language, our authors hail from around the world. It is fully refereed by a board of established scholars; a double-blind review process is used. In existence since 1974.

C is edited by Thomas Herron of the Department of English, Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences, East Carolina University, and is published jointly by the South-Central Renaissance Conference and East Carolina University. For more information, visit the EIRC website.

The North Carolina Literary Review is published annually by the English Department, East Carolina University, and the North Carolina Literary and Historical Association. Winner of numerous awards and citations, including the Modern Language Association's Best New Journal in 1994, NCLR publishes poetry, fiction, and non-fiction prose by and interviews with North Carolina writers, and articles and essays about North Carolina literature, history, and culture. Upcoming issues will feature special sections on NC Science Fiction (2001) and Flight in NC (2003). Subscriptions are $20 for two years or $36 for four years. Tar River Poetry
Tar River Poetry recently celebrated its 20th year with a "best of" retrospective, reprinting poems from the past forty issues. A nationally ranked magazine of verse (the Dictionary of Literary Biography listed it as one of the top ten poetry magazines in the country), TRP publishes interviews, reviews, and poetry by emerging writers as well as Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award winners. Past contributors include William Stafford, Sharon Olds, Leslie Norris, William Matthews, Louis Simpson, Betty Adcock, John Logan, A. Poulin Jr., Paula Rankin, A.R. Ammons, Carolyn Kizer, Albert Goldbarth, Patricia Goedicke, and many others. Subscriptions are $12 a year (two issues); $20 for two years (four issues).  For more information, visit the TRP website.
