The Department of English offers many activities that give students a chance to apply their learning and skills outside of the classroom: internships, study abroad programs, Sigma Tau Delta honor society, ECU Poetry Forum, ECU student chapter of the Society for Technical Communication (STC), and more. Courses in English can prepare students to participate in student publications, such as The Rebel, Expressions, and The East Carolinian.
The East Carolinian is a student-produced newspaper. Visit their website at http://www.theeastcarolinian.com/.
The forum is conducted in a workshop style, and meetings are open to
listeners. Writers who plan to attend should bring 8 to 10 copies of
each poem they wish to have discussed.
The English Club is open to all students interested in discussing a wide variety of topics related to English Studies. The meetings are friendly and informal. Visit their website.
The English Department Honors Program provides an opportunity for outstanding English majors to undertake intensive research in an area of interest. To qualify for the program, a student must have a minimum cumulative and major 3.0 GPA. Students participating in the program enroll in ENGL 4550 and 4555 in consecutive semesters of their senior year. After extensive reading on a topic and consultation with an advisor chosen from among the senior faculty, the student submits an essay and takes an oral examination on the area of research.
Expressions magazine is ECU's minority publication. Visit their website at http://www.ecu.edu/cs-studentaffairs/expressions/.
The Creative Writing Club meets from 6-7 p.m. Wednesdays in the English Faculty Lounge.
Visit Film Club's Facebook page.
The Rebel is a literary and arts magazine produced by ECU students. Visit their website at http://www.ecu.edu/cs-studentaffairs/rebel/?RenderForPrint=1&mod.
