The ECU Department of English offers the following programs:

  • Bachelor of Arts in English (the English major)
  • Master of Arts in English with eight concentration options
  • PhD in Rhetoric, Writing, and Professional Communication
  • Undergraduate Minors in English, Creative Writing, Film Studies, and Linguistics
  • Undergraduate Certificates in Business and Technical Communication and in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)
  • Graduate Certificates in Professional Communication, Multicultural and Transnational Literatures, TESOL, and Teaching English in the Two-Year College

In addition, English students at ECU can expect to benefit from a breadth of faculty expertise across many areas of study (creative writing, rhetoric, literature, linguistics and film studies among others). We are a large department with many dedicated scholar-teachers; the departments hosts a number of journals, offers many internship opportunities, and puts out exciting interdisciplinary research and creative projects. Above all, student success is our first priority.
