Graduate School Admissions

Information about the graduate school application process for nondegree, nondegree certificate, and degree-seeking MA & PhD students can be found on the ECU Graduate School website.

For more information about the application process, read the FAQs, send an e-mail to englishgrad@ecu.edu or call 252.328.6660. For specific categories of admissions, use the links below.

Nondegree Admission

The nondegree student classification is a temporary graduate classification. It may be used by those who need course credit for a post baccalaureate certificate or teacher licensure, who have expectations of enrolling in a degree or CAS program, or by those who desire professional or personal enrichment.

Those wishing to be admitted as a nondegree student should submit a nondegree application online with the application fee and an official transcript showing a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.

Certificate in Professional Communication Program

To apply for the Certificate in Professional Communication, you must apply to the graduate school as a nondegree student or as a certificate student.

To apply as a nondegree certificate student, you need to submit an application form online, a $60 processing fee, and all transcripts. Credit earned while enrolled in a graduate certificate program (up to 15 s.h.) may be transferred into a degree program with the approval of the Director of Graduate Studies.

Please follow up on your application if you haven't heard anything within a month or so after submitting it.

For more information, check out the MA degree admissions procedures and the FAQs. If you have question, please contact the graduate office at 252.328.6660 or englishgrad@ecu.edu.

Certificate in Multicultural and Transnational Literatures
Application Procedures

There are several ways you can be admitted to the Multicultural and Transnational Literatures Online Certificate program.  To apply, you must submit an application online the graduate school website.

1) As a nondegree student

If you wish to be admitted as a nondegree student, you can begin this process two weeks before the start of classes. Nondegree status requires an application form, fee, and transcripts.

2) As a nondegree Certificate student

Nondegree Certificate status requires application form, fee, and transcripts.

Because ECU must receive copies of transcripts from all institutions where you have completed courses before you can be enrolled, you will want to begin the application process about 6 weeks before the start of class.

3) As a degree-seeking MA student

Degree-seeking MA status requires application form and fee, transcripts, statement of purpose, letters of recommendation, and GRE scores. See MA degree admissions.

Note: While the Graduate Certificate can be a pathway to a Masters Degree at ECU, such as the Masters Degree in English with a concentration in Multicultural & Transnational Literatures, completion of the Certificate does not guarantee admission into a graduate degree program. Application to the graduate degree program must be made separately. If all 12 s.h. of certificate credits are to count towards a graduate degree at ECU, application to the degree program must be made before half of the certificate hours (6 s.h.) have been completed. A maximum of 9 non-degree s.h. can be applied toward a graduate degree.

If you plan to complete the Certificate and go on to earn an MA, you should consider enrolling as a degree-seeking student from the beginning.

MA Degree Application Process

Applications for the MA in English degree program include a completed application form, official transcripts of all prior academic work, letters of recommendation, appropriate standardized test scores, statement of residence, statement of purpose, and an application fee of $60.00.

Students seeking a concentration in Creative Writing must submit a portfolio of poems, short stories, or essays to the Creative Writing faculty prior to admission to the concentration.

Applications are submitted at the Graduate School web site. Further information is available by telephoning the Graduate School at 252-328-6012.

The dates below are deadlines for receipt of the application form by the Graduate School. Early application is encouraged, particularly if application for an assistantship is contemplated. Students are encouraged to inquire about individual programs as early as possible since some programs have earlier deadlines and review applications only at fixed times during the year.
