Joseph Horst joined the English faculty as a lecturer in the Spring of 2006. Working together with students and faculty of the English and Theater Departments, he held a reading of his Master’s thesis, Enemies, in November of 2005 at the Emerge Gallery located in downtown Greenville. Enemies was a semi-finalist in the 2006 O'Neill Theater's Playwrights Conference, placing in the top 100 of almost 800 submissions that year, and won 7th place in the 76th Annual Writer’s Digest Writing Competition (Stageplay) in 2007. Enemies was also performed in the Mendenhall Student Center at ECU in February 2008, selling out opening and closing nights and raising over $1,500 for a local charity for fallen police officers. During his undergraduate time at ECU, he worked extensively with The East Carolinian and won awards for Best News Story in 1992 and was awarded Grand Prize Print PSA in 1994 from the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention for an alcohol awareness campaign.
