Bruce Southard is currently editing materials for The Linguistic Atlas of Oklahoma, an autonomous project that is one component of the larger Linguistic Atlas of the United States and Canada. His primary research interest is in the area of dialectology. He has published articles dealing with such diverse subjects as the language of science-fiction fan magazines, the incorporation of English loan words into Korean, and pronunciation variation in coastal North Carolina. His presentations before scholarly organizations have covered such topics as the acoustical analysis of speech, dialect variation in Oklahoma, and the language of professional wrestlers. A Senior Bibliographer for the MLA International Bibliography, he has contributed to the annual Linguistics volume since 1979.
