Undergraduate Programs

The Department of English offers three undergraduate programs to fit the needs students with a diverse set of interests. These programs include: BA in English;  English minor; and the Certificate in Business, Technical, and Professional Writing

Bachelor of the Arts (BA) Degree in English

The minimum degree requirement for a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in English is 126 semester hours (s.h.) of credit as follows:

General Education Requirements:
42 s.h.

Foreign Language through Level 1004:
12 s.h.

4. Language Study--Creative Writing, Linguistics, Rhetoric and Composition, or Technical and Professional Writing: 3 s.h.

Electives: 24 s.h.

Choose an additional 24 s.h. of ENGL electives 2000 or above.

Total English Hours: 36 s.h.

Minor or Second Major: s.h. vary depending on program.

English Minor

The primary requirement for a minor in English is 24 semester hours of English courses (exclusive of Freshman Composition). A minimum of 12 s.h. must be selected from courses numbered above ENGL 2899. CLAS 3460 (Classical Mythology) may be among these 24 semester hours.

Certificate in Business, Technical, and Professional Writing 

For certification, students must register with the Department of English and maintain a minimum average of B in at least 15 s.h. chosen from below.

ENGL 2710: English Grammar or ENGL 2730: Functional Grammar
ENGL 3030: Introduction to Rhetorical Studies

ENGL 3860: Introduction to Nonfiction Writing
ENGL 3870: Introduction to Editing and Abstracting
ENGL 3885: Writing and Publications Development/Process
ENGL 3895: Topics in Technical and Professional Writing
ENGL 4890 or ENGL 4891: Practicum: Careers in Writing 
ENGL 5860: Advanced Nonfiction Writing

With departmental approval, certain other courses may be substituted.
