What the The Bates Center can do for students:
If you are in ENGL 1100 or 1200, our goal at The Bates Center is your success. We want to walk with you as you become a better writer. The place of your paper in this journey is that of a springboard. We will help you work on your paper in the hope that you will use our advice on other papers you write. We are willing to start at any point in the paper-writing process: we will listen to you, discuss your paper with you, or help you brainstorm ideas for your paper. We provide you with a sort of toolkit that you can use to polish the draft of the paper you bring us and to do a better job on your next paper. Come see us, and together we can collaborate to make you the best writer you can be.
Our goal is to help you become a better writer, and not just to help you achieve a piece of good writing. We are here to encourage the study of writing and to share resources with first-year writing students. Any proofreading we may do is not to improve any particular paper, but to give you a set of principles you can apply the next time you write that type of paper. We do not provide proofreading services: rather than fixing your paper for you, we aspire to give you strategies for attacking any problems you may encounter on your way to becoming a better writer.
Here are just a few things we can help you with in The Bates Center:
- Thesis statements
- Paragraph and paper development
- Brainstorming research topics and ideas
- Works cited/Bibliographies
- Finding online or book resources
- Anything that confuses you about your assignment
- Putting your thoughts into words
- Specific grammatical concerns
