In Turkey, the increasing presence of scarves and long coats as part of tessetur, dressing according to Islamic advice, has led to a formidable debate about the legality of wearing such garments in public places. Focusing on the intersections of personal choice, religious freedom and the state as a secular entity, this presentation will also include visual images of the variety of scarves and how and where they are worn.
