- Prof. Joshua Landy (French, Stanford University) will speak on, "The Uses of Literature." Faced with an increasing need to justify the value of literary study, many have responded in one of two ways, either by claiming unrealistic benefits ostensibly conferred by literature (moral improvement, for example) or by insisting on its glorious uselessness. This talk outlines three benefits literary artworks can genuinely be said to put on offer: (1) clarification; (2) formal modeling; (3) the fine-tuning of the capacities. For the third case, the Parable of the Sower in Mark will provide an extended example. Prof. Landy is currently fellow in residence at the National Humanities Center in Triangle Park, where his subject of research is: Literature, Narrative, and the Shape of a Life.
