French 3500
Introduction to Literature
Prerequisite: French 1004 or equivalent (Counts towards major and minor in French)
Required Materials:
The purpose of French 3500 is to teach students to grasp the basic structural relationships of a literary text in order to read critically and imaginatively. French 3500 is organized by genres because of certain critical terms and problems in reading are most often associated with a particular genre: poetry, theater as a performing art based on a literary text, and prose and in particular the narrator's role in shaping the reader's interpretation of the text. In adopting this framework, we have attempted to select works that are interesting in terms of the author's use of the particular genre. while one goal of French 3500 is to encourage a critical and imaginative reading of literary texts by novice readers, an important aim is to facilitate the exchange of ideas in the classroom. Reading together, we hope that the book will enrich our classroom experience and, indeed, the study of literature. For more information, contact Dr. Fladenmuller.
