Environmental Geography

The Environmental Geography program is dedicated to providing students with a strong background in human-environmental interactions that is grounded in the physical and human geography. This work also has a decided technological component associated with the geographic information science program in geography at ECU. Undergraduate students are immersed in field, laboratory, and literary research. An emphasis is placed on training students to conduct original research and present this information locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally.

At present, the program emphasizes the following areas of interest:

  1. Water Quantity and Quality Issues
  2. Human-induced Atmospheric Climate Change
  3. Human-modification of Rivers, Wetlands, and Estuaries
  4. Coastal Environmental Issues
  5. Environmental Hazards and Sustainable Planning
  6. Loss of Arable Soils

Research is currently being conducted in the following areas:

  1. Coastal Carolinas and Virginia
  2. North Carolina Coastal Atlas
  3. Piedmont of North Carolina
  4. India
  5. Southern Pacific Islands
  6. Southern California
  7. South America
  8. Japan

A student who is a product of this learning environment is a professional; someone who is trained to be equally comfortable with investigating both scientific and applied environmental issues from a foundation of spatial thinking and analysis. This foundation includes long established geographic traditions, recent conclusions, and innovations in science. The transferability of the acquired theoretical knowledge, laboratory analysis, and field experience produces a student with a toolbox that permits him/her to address needs and challenges of a new employer or academic setting.
