Interdisciplinary Programs
Description:
The major in African and African American studies is an interdisciplinary degree program housed in the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences. Its comparative focus and multidisciplinary emphasis complement many existing programs that seek to prepare undergraduate students for competitive careers and productive work in a global world of different cultures, political systems, and economic infrastructures. Students pursuing a degree in AAAS will develop a broad perspective on human values and ethnic diversity, as well as an understanding of the socio-political, religious, and historical evidence related to African peoples, both in Africa and the diasporic communities of North America and the Atlantic World.

An education in Great Books unique in the conception that the best way to attain knowledge, as opposed to information, opinion, or training, is for students to read and discuss original texts. Plato taught that the mind does not acquire the most meaningful lessons by listening to lectures but by engaging actively in dialogue with a skilled questioner. The Great Books program offers seminars on literature, philosophy, the natural and social sciences, and the arts, in which the teacher acts as a guide and fellow investigator of ideas that have most influenced our world. Students learn to read, think, argue, and write analytically on such questions as what makes a city or an individual civilized, what are the essential qualities and organization of nature, and what lessons history teaches about human behavior, and the best forms of society, economy, and government.
Description:
East Carolina University's minor in indigenous peoples of the Americas focuses on exposing you to the culture, history, arts, rituals, and people indigenous to the entire American region. This includes North America, South America, Central America, and the Caribbean region.
The culture indigenous to the American landscape is felt and seen in many aspects of today's society. The names of towns and rivers, the foods we eat, even the structure of our governments are influenced by these cultures. Whether you are working toward a career in archaeology, health care, politics, education, or business, a heightened awareness of the diverse populations throughout America will be beneficial to your career aspirations.
The minor in indigenous peoples of the Americas requires 24 semester hours and is housed within the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences. Courses are drawn from three disciplines, and no more than 12 semester hours may be taken in any one discipline. The minor consists of courses in anthropology, art, English, geography, history, and music. The common theme of these courses and this interdisciplinary minor is the lifestyles, history, art, literature, and music of the native people of the Americas.
You are encouraged to take prerequisites as part of your foundations curriculum requirements wherever possible. Prerequisites may also be waived at the discretion of the instructor. You may choose a maximum of 3 semester hours of independent studies in a relevant discipline and a maximum of 3 semester hours of special topics courses in a relevant discipline.

What is Neuroscience?
The word “neuroscience” is relatively new, however, the study of the brain is almost as old as man himself. Neuroscience is the study of the nervous system and how it regulates behavior. Explaining this interaction has been described as one of the "last frontiers" in science, as it is marked with many exciting and unresolved challenges. This interdisciplinary field allows scientists to share a common interest in studying the anatomy, physiology, chemistry, and function of the central nervous system. Historically, scientists devoted themselves to an understanding of the nervous system utilizing techniques from within a discipline such as Medicine, Biology, and Psychology. Today, neuroscience is quite eclectic, with other disciplines such as Computer Science, which have areas emerging that focus on neuroscience.
