Students at East Carolina University can graduate prepared to enter their chosen career field with the knowledge and skills they acquire through the leadership studies minor. The multidisciplinary program teaches students about key concepts and theories and reinforces this knowledge with examples from some of the world's most prominent leaders. The leadership studies minor requires a minimum of 18 s.h., with course options from anthropology, communications, education, English, history, human development and family science, management, philosophy, political science, psychology and sociology. This helps students in the minor to develop well-rounded background knowledge about leadership, its complexity and importance.
The leadership studies minor complements any academic major. The program is housed within the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences and its Department of Political Science. Faculty members in departments from across East Carolina University teach the courses, which allows the student to tailor the minor to their particular academic and career interests, while exploring the breadth of the field.
Students are strongly encouraged to supplement their academic study with leadership experiences that are available both on-and off-campus. These might include leadership positions in student organizations, training programs offered by the Division of Student Life, community engagement activities and internships, all of which are important ways for students to observe what they have learned in their classes and begin to develop their own leadership style and skills. The Leadership Studies Program collaborates with the Center for Student Leadership and Civic Engagement to promote these opportunities for students.
