The David Julian and Virginia Suther Whichard
Distinguished Professorship
in the Humanities

This endowed professorship was made possible through the generosity of the Whichard family in honor of David Julian and Virginia Suther Whichard of Greenville. David Whichard, who was emeritus chairman of the board for The Daily Reflector when he died in 1993 at the age of 98, served as editor and publisher of the newspaper for nearly 60 years. Virginia Whichard, who passed away in 1973, graduated from East Carolina in 1917, taught school before her marriage in 1926, and then joined her husband in the management of the newspaper.

The professorship is assigned by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences to a particular humanities department or program for a period of one or two years. A committee of faculty associated with the department or program conducts a national search for a distinguished scholar, and upon identifying a suitable candidate, recommends the person for the Dean to appoint.
