Lauren received her B.A. with Honors from the South Carolina Honors College at the University of South Carolina in May 2012. She majored in International Studies with a focus on Africa, and minored in both French and Spanish. At USC, she interned at South Carolina Political Collections, and wrote for the viewpoints section of the student newspaper. Lauren also completed an incredible summer study abroad program in Valencia, Spain in 2010. At East Carolina, Lauren’s concentration is International Higher Education Administration. She will also be obtaining a TESOL certificate. Currently, she works as a graduate assistant for both Dr. Popke in the geography department and Dr. Deena in the English department. Next year, she will be helping out in the International House alongside several of her fellow MAIS students, which will hopefully prepare her for a future career in the study abroad field. Lauren is involved with GSAIS, and is looking forward to becoming the Vice President of the organization for the 2013-2014 school year. She sees the MAIS field experience as her opportunity to travel to an African country, ideally Senegal, where she will be able to practice her French skills. She wishes to become familiar with a local dialect while on her trip, and to add Swahili and Arabic to her language repertoire in the future. Her research interests include human rights, notions of cultural identity, and modern technology’s impact on communication. Outside of academics, she enjoys working out and playing lacrosse with the ECU women’s club team. Lauren is an avid fan of college sports and hip-hop music.
