Liyao is from Beijing, China and has lived in the US since 2011. She did her Bachelor's degree with a major in Journalism at China University of Political Science and Law, close to the Great Wall in Beijing. Liyao is now completing her Master’s in the MAIS program at East Carolina University with a concentration in Professional Communication and Higher Education Administration. During her two years at ECU, she has worked as a graduate assistant for the International Students advisor in the Office of International Affairs. In the office, she is able to use her bilingual (Chinese and English) skills to help other Chinese students at ECU. Meanwhile, Liyao is also interested in learning other languages from her fellow international students. Helping more international students adapt to their new lives at ECU has made Liyao want to pursue her career in the field of higher education. Earlier in 2013, Liyao was accepted to Indiana University at Bloomington’s PhD program in Higher Education and Student Affairs. After graduating, Liyao wishes she could either pursue the doctoral degree or work in a cross-cultural program at a university. In her free time, Liyao enjoys traveling across the United States with friends. She has been to New York City, Washington D.C, Florida, Pennsylvania and California so far. In the future, she hopes to travel around the world and meet more people from different cultural backgrounds.
