Clinical Psychology MA Program PLEASE NOTE: We will NOT be accepting applications for the Clinical MA (Terminal) program for next year. Qualified applicants are encouraged to apply to the Ph.D. program in health psychology (in clinical behavioral medicine or pediatric school). Also NOTE: We do not plan to accept applications for the clinical program for the next three years. These include the 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11 school years. We plan to review this decision in three years. Program Overview The clinical psychology graduate program at East Carolina University is a two-year, 51 semester hour program. We offer a clinical curriculum with the opportunity to use elective hours to develop additional training in working with children, applied behavior analysis, neuropsychology, and other areas. The mission of the program is to prepare the student to work as a psychologist in the public mental health sector. In addition to the development of professional skills as a psychologist, the program also prepares the student to pursue further educational work at the doctoral level. In pursuit of this goal, the program demands a research thesis as part of the degree requirements. Upon completion of the class work, practicum work, internship, and thesis, the graduate of the clinical psychology program is eligible for licensure by the North Carolina Psychology Board as a Licensed Psychological Associate (LPA). | Faculty Beverly L. Harju, Ph.D. - Director Ervin Davis, Ph.D. Erik Everhart, Ph.D. Jean Ann Golden, Ph.D. Susan McCammon, Ph.D. In addition to the full time faculty listed above, students also receive instruction from a number of other full time faculty from the school and general programs as well as from adjunct faculty from the community. | Admissions Requirements It is strongly recommended that all applicants take a common core of undergraduate psychology courses before applying to the clinical program. These include introductory psychology, psychological statistics, experimental psychology, learning, personality, physiological psychology, tests and measurements, and abnormal psychology. Over the past several years, we have processed an average of 80 completed applications to the clinical program from which eight are selected in the first-year class. Average scores on the objective measures for students admitted into the program generally fall in the following ranges: | GRE (Verbal + Quantitative) | 1100-1150 | | Advanced GRE | 560-620 | | Undergraduate GPA | 3.15-3.80 | | Psychology GPA | 3.40-3.90 | | Senior Year GPA | 3.45-3.70 | An on-site interview is required. All clinical faculty are involved in evaluating candidates. The practice of conducting on-site interviews allows candidates, as well as faculty, the opportunity to evaluate each other. Fifteen to twenty candidates, selected from the completed applications, will be interviewed prior to the final selections. Admission to the clinical program is contingent upon meeting all requirements of the ECU Graduate School and being recommended by the graduate admission committee of the Department of Psychology. A completed application will include a Graduate School application; a Department of Psychology basic information sheet; GRE Verbal, Quantitative, and advanced test scores; complete college transcripts; and a minimum of two letters of recommendation (at least one from a psychologist). The admissions screening procedure begins on March 1st of each year. All application material must be received by that date. | Application Materials>>> (Psychology Department & Graduate School Application Forms) The admissions screening procedure begins on March 1st of each year. All application material must be received by that date. Internship During the second year of study, students in both the child and adult tracks will have an internship placement. Currently, student internship placements run on one of three schedules: (1) Some students will be on placements three days per week beginning July 1 and concluding on April 30; (2) some students will be on placements five days a week beginning July 1 and concluding December 31; and (3) some students will be on placements beginning January 1 and concluding June 30. Students in the three-day per week sites will attend classes and work on thesis matters on the other two days; students in full time placements generally do not have other classes during the six months of the internship placement. Generally, our internships pay the student a stipend ranging from $4,000 to $5,000 during the internship placement although we do have some placements that do not provide stipends for the student. Internships are assigned to match the students' interest and agency availability. Over the past two years, internship sites have included mental health centers, 24-hour care developmental disability facilities, mental hospitals, the prison system, and private practice settings. Because of the current mental health system reforms in North Carolina, traditional mental health centers will no longer be internship sites. Thesis The masters' thesis in psychology is a professional research paper and an example of students' research and writing skills. Students will present the completed thesis at an oral examination conducted by the thesis committee as the last step in the process. Six semester-hour credits are allowed for the thesis. The student forms a thesis committee at the beginning of the second year of training. Once the student formulates a thesis plan with the faculty member who will direct the thesis, the student will present the research plan in a formal proposal defense. The student is expected to follow all APA ethical standards for research and will also receive approval from the ECU Institutional Reseach Board (IRB) before data collection will begin. At the completion of the research, the student will prepare a thesis paper according to university guidelines and hold an oral defense of the research. Generally, the thesis defense is the last requirement to be completed before the student graduates. for additional information contact Beverly L.
