Graduate Program in Research Psychology
• Financial Support
The majority of our full-time students have been research assistants for at least part of their time here. Besides providing financial assistance, the assistantships also offer the opportunity to improve communication and research skills. However, we have recently been informed that the department will no longer fund research assistantships for students in the research program. We have a new doctoral program in health psychology, and the funds that used to support students in our research program are being diverted to support students in the new doctoral program. Faculty in our department may, if they wish, include support for graduate students in their grant proposals. Students considering our research program should contact the faculty with whom they would like to work to determine whether or not the faculty would be willing and able to fund a research assistantship for the student. If the response of the faculty member is positive, the student should request that the faculty member write a letter of intent to fund an assistantship for the student. That letter should be included in the application materials that are sent to the university.
During the regular academic year, graduate students are restricted to a maximum of 20 hours of employment per week with the university, except for international students, who are allowed a few more hours. During the summer sessions the maximum is increased to 38 hours. To be eligible for a summer assistantship the student must be registered for one of the summer sessions or registered for the following fall semester (Bolen, April, 2005).
