Master of Arts in General Psychology

Research Concentration

The Research Concentration is designed for those students who wish to pursue further study at the Ph.D. level and/or to work as research psychologists. It requires the completion of 30 semester hours. The Department of Psychology at ECU boasts a large and formidable faculty of nearly 30 members. About thirteen faculty members have been identified as being closely associated with the Research concentration, but nearly all of our faculty have been involved in the this concentration at one time or another.

The M.A. Research Program allows students flexibility in selecting an emphasis in one of the following areas:

  • Behavioral Neuroscience / Developmental Psychobiology
  • Developmental
  • General Experimental
  • Health
  • Quantitative
  • Social
  • Or, with an advisor, construct a specialized area of emphasis.

Students completing this program receive a thorough grounding in psychology as an empirical science. Research students are prepared in the foundations necessary to successfully enter and complete doctoral programs - broad scholarship, quantitative methods, experimental design, psychological theory and research experience. Many M.A. program graduates have continued their studies in academic or applied doctoral programs, while others have found employment in program evaluation, medical laboratory research, and junior college teaching.

Inquiries about the program may be made to Dr. John Cope or Dr. Karl Wuensch. Their complete contact information are on the left.
