Pediatric School Psychology is an emerging sub-specialty of school psychology that includes the competencies of both school psychology and health psychology. Pediatric school psychologists bring the understanding of learning, development and schools that is characteristic of school psychologists and develop the knowledge of health problems and the health care system that is characteristic of the health psychologist. Graduates of the pediatric school psychology concentration will:
- be able to practice within a variety of settings that serve children and adolescents with health-related problems.
- have the knowledge and skills to work within and across medical, home, and school settings.
- be competent to work with children and adolescents who have acute and chronic medical disorders, providing the usual array of direct and indirect services to enhance the educational and behavioral health of the child.
- have a preventive orientation, able to provide primary prevention and health promotion programs designed to impact the entire school population.
This concentration will be attractive to qualified persons with an undergraduate degree in psychology or a related field. The PhD program in health psychology with a pediatric school psychology concentration is designed to meet criteria for accreditation by the American Psychological Association and as well as the doctoral program requirements of the National Association of School Psychologists. The concentration is structured to allow graduates to meet the educational requirements of the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction for licensure as a school psychologist as well as for licensure as a Licensed Psychologist/Health Services Provider-Psychologist by the North Carolina Psychology Board.
APPLICATION DEADLINE for the Ph.D. program is January 15th.
