The School Psychology Program is designed to provide a strong applied and theoretical background in psychological foundations (human development, educational psychology, child/adolescent psychopathology, and social/cultural foundations of behavior), assessment (intelligence, achievement, early childhood, and personality), intervention (counseling, consultation, interventions), and professional studies (professional school psychology, ethics and standards, foundations of education). In addition, the department requires that all students demonstrate a basic knowledge of statistics and research design.
The program requires 63 semester hours, including a 1,200 hour full-time internship, a thesis (6 semester hours), and 51 semester hours of course work. The School Psychology Graduate Program is accredited by the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP), the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education Programs (NCATE), and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
Graduate assistantships within the Psychology Department may be available to qualified students. Applicants wishing to be considered for an assistantship should include a letter with the application indicating a desire to be considered for an assistantship and explaining any outstanding need for financial assistance. Students may also pursue graduate assistantships in other departments in the university. These positions are advertised in various university sources.
