The Department of Sociology currently has 22 faculty members, offers B.A., B.S., and M.A. degrees, and contributes to an interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in Coastal Resources Management. Members of the faculty are also affiliated with the Center for Health Services Research and Development, the Regional Development Institute, the Women's Studies Program, the Leo W. Jenkins Cancer Center, and the Brody School of Medicine.
The faculty are highly research active, with publications in well-respected Sociology journals and speciality journals such as the American Sociological Review, Social Problems, Social Science Quarterly, Teaching Sociology, Sociological Inquiry, Sociological Spectrum, the Journal of Health and Social Behavior, Social Science and Medicine, JAMA, Adolescence, Journal of Marriage and the Family, Journal of Divorce and Remarriage, Sex Roles, and IJMED (just to name a few).
Faculty research has been funded by grants from numerous state and federal organizations, including ASA, NSF, NIH, NOA, NASA, FEMA, NC Division of Emergency Management, NC Sea Grant, and the American Cancer Society.
Both faculty and students participate actively in professional organizations, like the American Sociological Association and the Southern Sociological Society.
Graduates of the department are enrolled in prominent Sociology Ph.D. programs around the country while others have been highly successful in acquiring positions in the workforce, particularly in social research.
