Eastern North Carolina Inequality Atlas 

Visitors to the CDIR webpage will be able to access descriptions prepared by graduate students of inequality among Eastern North Carolina counties and municipalities according to an expanding list of topics


Eastern NC Aging Latino Initiative

The Latino population aged 45 and older has grown significantly over the past 20 years. This population is likely to care for older family members, invite older family members in countries of origin to join them, and to be in need of assistance. There is a need to prepare for heightened pressure upon ambulatory clinical sites, hospitals, long-term care facilities, and focal points for home and community-based care. Access to such services is impeded by cohort and cultural differences including language and the complexity of the U.S. ambulatory and institutional care environment. 

In partnership with the NC Division of Aging and Adult Services, four Area Agencies on Aging in Eastern NC serving 29 counties, the Association of Mexicans in NC, and faculty members in the Department of Anthropology, information from several focus groups will be used to guide the development of information represented in Spanish concerning medical and health issues and eligibility for procedures to access medical, health-promoting, and community-based services. Data from those assisted will be gathered using instruments prepared in Spanish including self-reported demographic and health/medical profile, the availability of informal assistance, and past experience surrounding former use of medical and supporting services in the U.S.


East Carolina Friends

Through CDIR, efforts are underway to secure external support for and sustainability of an initiative pairing undergraduate students in Sociology and Social Work with children the primary grades identified by teachers and counselors. This initiative extends mentoring beyond academic preparation.
