The Sociology Department and its faculty are actively involved in research through a number of university organizations and research groups. The Department is the home for the Center for Diversity and Inequality Research (CDIR) whose primary goals are scientific research, public policy, and public advocacy focused upon the broad issues of race and ethnicity, class, gender, sexual orientation, age, religion, and disability.

Faculty are also affiliated with the Center for Health Services Research and Development, The Center for Health Disparities Research, the Center for Natural Hazards Research, the Institute for Coastal Science and Policy, the Regional Development Institute and the Ph.D. in Coastal Resources Management program.
