CU hosts political illustrations exhibit
GREENVILLE, NC (Feb. 29, 2008) -- The political visions of fifty artists will be on display at East Carolina University’s Mendenhall Student Gallery March 20 through April 18. The exhibition, Another Voice, will feature over 150 political illustrations that challenge and celebrate politics and political difference.

Curated by Patrick Flynn, former art director for The Progressive magazine, the exhibition arrives at time when political interest is at an all-time high, said Sarah Searcy, president of the ECU Painting Guild.

“This exhibition provides an important opportunity for School of Art students and the greater university community to be exposed to and learn about political illustration and role of political illustrators as social informers, commentators, and galvanizers," Searcy said.

Coe, an activist, painter, author and comic book illustrator whose work has been exhibited at New York’s Museum of Modern Art will also be giving an artist talk at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, April 4 in the Speight Auditorium at the ECU School of Art and Design, Jenkins Fine Arts Center. The artists will also visit with art students and faculty.

McLimans, an award-winning mixed-media illustrator, is a winner of the 2007 Caldecott Honor Award for his book Gone Wild. Coe has appeared on the cover of Art News and been the subject of a retrospective exhibition at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C.

Kroninger’s photo collages have been featured on the cover of Time magazine, his work has been the subject of a one-person show at the Museum of Modern Art, and he has created a variety of animation projects for clients including the Nickelodeon channel.

“One goal of the event is to activate the students’ participation in politics and to encourage careful consideration of the choices they make that will determine the country’s future, domestically and on the international stage,” said Lisa Beth Robinson, event coordinator. “Given the interest in presidential politics, we’d like to offer this as one of the many voices in visual political expression. The exhibition was selected by students from the School of Art and Design who share a deep interest in politics and in visual expression as a tool for change.”

The event is sponsored by ECU’s Painting and Design Associates guilds, the Fine Arts Funding Board, Gray Gallery, School of Communication, ECU Honors Program, the Carol Grotnes Belk Distinguished Chair, School of Art and Design, and the Student Union.
