Communication graduate spreads 'goodwill' to others
(posted Sept. 24, 2008)
A communication degree can serve as a strong foundation for a future career that one feels passionate it about whether it be sports, the arts or volunteer work.
Jennifer Odal (formerly Gibson) is living proof. Odal graduated from ECU in 2001 with a degree in communications/public relations. She now works as marketing and communications manager for Goodwill Industries of Lower South Carolina.
“Working for a non-profit is exciting, rewarding and challenging,” Odal says. “Because there are limited resources available, we have to find creative ways to stretch our marketing dollars, and it is important that we really think and plan before executing an initiative. I really enjoy this job because—not only do I have the opportunity to do what I love (problem solving, creative thinking, relationship building)—but everyday I see the positive impact that we make on our community.”
She also says that, as she continues to grow in her career, she calls upon the knowledge she gained at ECU.
“I'll see myself using terms and techniques I learned in Dr. (Chuck) Grant's Comm Research Class or methods learned from Dr. (Linda) Kean's PR Strategies Class.”
Odal plans on returning to college next year to complete her MBA.
