School of Communication Faculty, Student and Alumni Awards FACULTY: Dr. Todd Fraley — named Most Inspiring Faculty Member by the Communication Graduate Student Association. 2007–08 Dr. Cindy Elmore is a finalist for the May Ray Joyner Award for Faculty Service Through Continuing Education 2007. Dr. Laura Prividera was awarded the UNC BOG Distinguished Professor for Teaching Award. Dr. John Howard was awarded the 2007–08 University Alumni Award for Outstanding Teaching. Pam Hopkins and Dr. John Howard were both named finalists for the 2007–08 University Alumni Award for Outstanding Teaching. Dr. Laura Prividera — East Carolina University's Alumni Award for Outstanding Teaching 2006–07 Pam Hopkins — as a member of Toastmasters International took part in their Fall 2006 contests. Hopkins placed first in the Greenville Club Speech Evaluation Contest on Sept. 21. She then placed first in the Area 63 (comprised of 5 clubs) Speech Evaluation Contest on Oct. 7. She also placed first at the Division F (three Areas included) Speech Evaluation Contest on Oct. 21. And, she went to the State Conference in Morehead City—District 37 (from the mountains to the coast) and placed third in the statewide Speech Evaluation Contest on Oct. 27. Dr. Festus Eribo — 2005 East Carolina University Five-Year Achievement Award for Excellence and Creative Activity Annual National Communication Association Conference in Boston in the fall of 2005. 1) Dr. Linda Kean and Dr. Laura Prividera won the top paper award for the African American and Culture division of NCA for the paper, "Communicating about Race and Health: A Content Analysis of Print Advertisements in African American and General Readership Magazines.” 2) Dr. Laura Prividera won the top paper award for the Basic Course Division of NCA. The title of her essay was "Suppressing cultural sensitivity: The role of whiteness in instructors’ course content and pedagogical practices." GRANTS: The inaugural CFAC Research and Creative Activity Grants were announced April 30, 2008. Thirteen faculty submitted applications and four faculty received funding totaling $27,189, including: •Ken Wyatt, Assistant Professor, School of Communication, $7,859 for his documentary film “Pray for Eric” about the people of western North Carolina supporting and hiding fugitive Eric Rudolph for more than five years; •Erick Green, Assistant Professor, School of Communication, $6,957 for his documentary “Bunny Estelle Sanders: The Mayor Who Stood Up.” Sanders is the African-American mayor of Roper, NC. Dr. Rebecca Dumlao as a recipient of a Faculty Senate Teaching Grant for 2008.Dr. Dumlao will be focused on the following: Developing web-based modules on service learning for the new capstone courses used in journalism and broadcasting (COMM 3321, 4290, 4250) as well as the existing capstone course (COMM 4080) used in interpersonal communication, public relations and media studies. Included will be: templates for service learning in communication, an overview of pedagogical benefits of service learning, podcasts with community partners about “what works well,” examples of past projects and lessons learned, downloadable handouts, ideas for using new technology in reflections, communication strategies for problem-solving and building relationships, etc.” Erick Green, Assistant Professor of Media Production, was awarded a Summer Creative Activity Grant by the ECU Division of Research and Graduate Studies. Summer 2007 The School of Communication received $60,000 from Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundations to create a multimedia students newsroom with modern journalism equipment. The newsroom became operational in the Spring of 2006. STUDENTS: Jon Bliven and James Gould were named "Student Fellows" to the Full Frame Documentary Festival in Durham, N.C. April 3–6. Dr. Bernard Timberg accompanied them to the festival as a Faculty Advisor. Only one or two top students is nominated by each school from North Carolina and nationally, as this is a national and international film festival. — Spring 2008 Tayleigh Davis and April Baer — Michael Bunting Scholarship recipients, Fall 2007 James Gould and Elise K. Phillips — David B. Martin Scholarship recipients, Fall 2007 Janet Stock — SOC Outstanding Senior award recipient in the BA Program, Spring 2007 Mike Miller — SGA Outstanding Senior in Communication award recipient, Spring 2007 Emily Carter — SOC Outstanding Graduate B.A. award recipient Fall 2006. Also, graduated Magna Cum Laude. Christopher Morrison — SOC Outstanding Graduate B.S. award recipient Fall 2006. Elizabeth Walsh — won a monetary award for her presentation of her story, "A Day in the Dark," at the4th Annual ECU Research and Creative Activity Symposium, anundergraduate symposium held during the Spring 2006 semester. Other students who presented their papers include Elisa Bizzotto, Carmin Black, Krystal Fuller, Samuel Key, Matthew Smiley and Jennifer Hill. Jason Freeman — one of 18 undergraduates in the national invited to participate in the National Undergraduate Honors Conference in Los Angeles sponsored by the Annenberg School of Communication. Students submitted research papers for selection. Freeman's paper investigated religious symbols and discussion in African American situation comedies. Christina Ann Guerry — 2004/2005 recipient of the ECAF/Richard B. Dollar Scholarship for high GPA and advertising abilities. James West Potter — Outstanding Graduate Award, BS recipient, Fall 2004. Also, graduated Cum Laude ALUMNI: Michael Aho — Exceptional Performance Award, U.S. Government, February 2006, August 2006 and October 2006. The Director's Award for Driving Collection, Office of Transnational Issues, U.S. Government, October 2006.
