About the School

A college degree is only as good as the professors behind it. At the School of Communication, our faculty is active in researching, filming, broadcasting, consulting and publishing. But our most important activity is teaching. From Dr. Linda Kean, who brings experience in public relations to the classroom, to Dr. John Howard, who has analyzed miscommunication between airplane pilots and control towers to help determine why planes go down, our professors have been there. Done that. And are here to help you do it too.

The School of Communication is housed within the College of Fine Arts and Communication. Our liaison between fine arts and communication creates a unique environment for our students to learn about interpersonal and mass communication within a larger artistic and dramatic context.

Our professors bring professional experience and nationally recognized scholarship into the classroom to provide students with authentic lessons that will prepare them for the start of their careers and critical thinking skills that will set them apart from others once their careers are underway.

The School of Communication facilitates internships for students. Examples include:

  • The Late Show with David Letterman
  • Vibe magazine

(Spring 2006 Newsletter corrections: Please note that on p. 7 the location of Smith & Associates is incorrect. The firm is located in Cary. Also, Amy Parsons is not the "full-time graphic artist" at Faulkner & Associates. Currently, she is the Creative Director.  As Creative Director, Parsons works in and oversees the Art Department pertaining to graphic design work as well as copywriting. While she does play a huge part in developing public relations' campaigns, her job mainly relates to the art side of the industry. Finally, Parsons'advice was for students to contact non-profit organizations and volunteer to help with their marketing efforts in order to gain real-life experience. We regret the errors!)
