Friends & Alumni in Communication

Graduates from East Carolina University's School of Communication are working all over the country in some very exciting and rewarding jobs. One graduate worked in a Manhattan recording studio (with clients including VH1, Comedy Central, CBS, NBC and Disney) before moving on to produce on-air promos at A&E. Fox 8 in High Point is the home of another grad—a reporter with credits from the NC Associated Press and an Honorable Mention as Rookie of the Year in TV Journalism. Jumping from coast to coast, another former student was an editor of Marvel Comics in Los Angeles and is now creative director for Sauers Communications—a full service creative agency that specializes in publication and print design.

Graduates have gone on to become authors, television show producers, wedding and special event planners, reporters, and editors. And that’s just a sampling of the variety of jobs in the communication field to which our graduates have brought their talents, creativity and energy. Some have entered the private sector, while others have served the public in various capacities through government or non-profit organizations.

Dear Friends and Alumni,

Thank you for your support of and interest in the ECU School of Communication. As a valued member of the ECU community, you are invited to join the CommCrew: Friends & Alumni of the School of Communication as a charter member.

In 2005, the School of Communication established CommCrew, an affiliation of alumni and friends who support the legacy, mission and growth of the School of Communication. The CommCrew has proven to be a welcome resource for alumni looking to stay in touch with the School.

Comm Crew projects and activities we look forward to include guest lectures and workshops, a professional advisory board, career support information, and networking.

The “Crew” has already managed to create and find funding for several scholarships for the School. Other successful projects include: Web site discussions, a biannual newsletter, a nostalgic photograph exhibit in Joyner E. (which we'll continue to expand), and the organization of an annual reunion banquet.

As more and more alumni join the CommCrew, more benefits will be reaped by students, alumni and others.

Charter membership ($25) extends from now through July 2008. Below you will find a link to a membership form. If you choose to make a donation of $100 or more, in addition to your membership you’ll be sponsoring a professionally framed nostalgic photograph exhibited in the hallways of the communication building.

Comm Crew organizers will be in touch as events and activities unfold.

Minutes from most recent Comm Crew meetings:

CommCrew meeting minutes for June 30, 2008
(For minutes from previous meetings, click the link at the top left of this page.)

Members present: Aho (phone), Anderson, Auld, Bullington, Collier (phone), Gaddis, Kean

The meeting was opened by Aho and moved to a report from the School of Communication. Kean covered topics of curriculum changes, scholarships and a fall membership invitation letter to be sent.
•    Because of the growth in the number of undergraduates interested in the communication major, the school has instituted enrollment management plans, which include raising the GPA entrance requirements for freshmen and current ECU students changing/declaring their major. This should take effect in the fall of 2008 but is awaiting final approval from the Chancellor.
•    The SOC gave out seven $1,000 scholarships for the 2008-2009 school year including the first freshman CommCrew scholarship. The group discussed ways to enhance the visibility of scholarship availability and information about the recipients. There will be a separate link on the School's web page (www.ecu.edu/comm) for scholarship information. Also, scholarships will be announced in freshman orientation and information will be emailed to all COMM majors.
•    Aho and Kean will work together to write a letter to alumni and friends encouraging membership in CommCrew and inviting them to the fall reunion banquet. The letter will also be sent to current students’ parents to their home address.

Mary Jane Gaddis from the College of Fine Arts and Communication office mentioned that the college had a new major gifts officer, Nancy Ball. Ball has been working in the college for about one month.

The next topic of focus was the fall reunion banquet. The group settled on a dinner event on Friday, September 26. This date coincides with parents’ weekend. The likely location for the event will be Mendenhall. Kean and Gaddis will check on availability of the great rooms. Possible speakers were discussed for the event as well. The group discussed the importance of inviting parents of current students as well as alumni and friends. Gaddis indicated she had a new mailing list of 3,200 alumni and recommended a post card follow up to remind people about the banquet after the initial membership letter goes out. CommCrew will also work with the parents’ group to help publicize the banquet.

Anderson brought up the idea of encouraging local businesses to join CommCrew. Anderson also initiated discussion on the possibility of a life time membership in CommCrew. Gaddis will explore how this works at ECU and in other units.

The meeting adjourned at 1:50 p.m.
