Graduate Studies

The path continues.

Our innovative graduate program prepares you to address the important issues that emerge at the intersection of health and communication.

The health issues facing us today are complex and have important implications for our future. The School of Communication offers a master of arts degree in communication with an emphasis in health communication. Graduates integrate communication theory and research into practice and influence the direction of the field of health communication.

Graduates develop knowledge and skills to evaluate the role of communication in health-related contexts. Our program examines communication issues that exist between and among patients, providers, and family members; how the media influences health decision making; the effects of organizational structures in health communication; the creation and dissemination of health information; and multiple influences of culture on health communication.

This 30-hour degree program offers a thesis and non-thesis option. Graduate assistantships in teaching and research are available. A background in health communication prepares professionals seeking a career change or students who wish to specialize their education to pursue a career in healthcare settings or doctoral study.
