Equipment Checkout Frequently Asked Questions
•    Who may check out equipment?  Only faculty, and students with I.D. & an active barcode who are enrolled in a production class may checkout production equipment.

•    How is equipment checked out?  All students must show student id and barcode before they can checkout equipment or use the editing bays.  If you are enrolled in a production class, your barcode and the barcode of the equipment you are checking out will be scanned.  The computer will automatically log the equipment out to your account.  When you return equipment, it will be re-scanned and automatically credited as returned.  Also, no classes have access to all equipment – the class that you are taking determines what equipment you will be allowed to check out.

•    How do I get a barcode?  If you do not have a barcode you can be issued one only if you are enrolled in a current production course. The lab monitors will verify this from the class roster sheet.  Then, you must fill out a barcode application and submit a copy of your driver’s license.  The lab monitor will enter your information into the computer before giving you the barcode. Bar codes are issued twice a year, September and January.   Your application and license copy will be kept on file.

•    How long can I check out equipment?  All equipment may be checked out for a maximum of two days and one night without instructor signature. For example: If a student checks out a camera on Monday morning, the camera must be returned one hour before closing on Tuesday. If a student wishes to checkout the equipment for a longer period, they must fill out a Multi-day Checkout Form and have their instructor sign it.

•    What if I’m late returning equipment? Each student has one “free” late day per semester.  Depending on how late, students may lose all check out privileges.   You will be responsible for the replacement cost of lost or damaged equipment.  Your registration will be flagged until this charge is settled.

•    What if the equipment’s broken?  You are responsible for ensuring that your equipment is working properly before you leave the lab. Check your own equipment. Once you leave, any existing damage becomes your responsibility.   You are required to return equipment in proper condition.   Normal wear and tear on the equipment is understood.  Negligence and misuse of the equipment will result in charges for repairs.  Regardless, if there is a problem, report it to the lab monitor upon returning the equipment.  Additional penalties will be assessed if you are found to have returned broken gear without reporting it.
