Fall 2010

"Classes without Quizzes": Social Networking for Alumni
Friday, October 22, 2010 - 10:30 - 11:30 AM - Mendenhall Student Center, Rm 221

This event, developed by the ECU Alumni Association, provided alumni with up-to-date information on and uses for social media. The School of Communication assembled a panel of area experts to share their experiences with the professional use of social media.

  • Beth Ann Atkins, Media Specialist with PCMH/University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina, discussed how they use social marketing/media to reach their constituents.
  • CommCrew president and seasoned reporter/writer, Mary Schulken ’79, discussed how news organizations and reporters are using social media to do reporting for stories and break news.
  • Barbara Bullington, current journalism instructor for the School of Communication, discussed how social media can be used in the classroom.  
  • Graduate student Dean Lindo discussed podcasting and where/how to find free providers of social media technology.

Renowned Film and Theatre Critic, Jeffrey Lyons, Visiting Scholar at ECU

Visiting November 1-8, 2010, Mr. Lyons taught in the ECU School of Communication’s feature writing course. This course, which is part of the School’s journalism curriculum, focused on writing for the arts and culture. Mr. Lyons gave the welcoming address to the School of Communication’s High School Media Workshop. This annual event is co-sponsored with the North Carolina Scholastic Media Association and brings together students from high schools all over the Inner Banks region who write for their student papers and yearbooks, as well as those who work at student radio and TV stations. While in residence, Mr. Lyons’ gave an evening presentation on ECU’s campus. This event was open to the public. Visit our Jeffrey Lyons web page for more details.

Media Production concentration moves to the School of Art and Design. Journalism remains in the School of Communication

Beginning in the fall of 2010, the Media Production concentration is no longer available to students entering ECU or applying for admission to the School of Communication. Current students in media production, admitted and accepted into the School of Communication prior to this upcoming academic year, can still graduate with this concentration in the School of Communication.
 
Students interested in journalism, including broadcasting, will find this program in the School of Communication.
 
Prospective students interested in the new media production program located in the School of Art and Design should contact that school's main office or visit their web site.

School of Communication alumni and friends enjoy annual reception

Former students, current faculty and others were able to reminisce about the past and catch up on what's new, when The School of Communication alumni and friends group, CommCrew, recently held its fourth annual reception at the Emerge Art Gallery in downtown Greenville.

 

John Beard, ECU alumnus (BFA '75), was the guest speaker. Beard is an Emmy-award winning TV journalist with 26 years of experience as a reporter and anchor in Los Angeles. More...
