Four Scholarship Opportunities Available to

Communication Majors through ECU'S

1) School of Communication Scholarship ($1000)
Eligibility – Undergraduate and Graduate Communication Majors

2) The David B. Martin Memorial Scholarship Fund ($1000)
Eligibility – Journalism & Media Production Majors


3) The Lester C. and Alta M. Rees Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund ($1000)
Eligibility – Out of State Journalism & Media Production Majors, Ranked in Top 10% of High School Graduating Class

4) Comm Crew Freshman Scholarship ($1000)
Eligibility – Incoming freshman admitted to the School of

Application Materials

Please submit:

•completed application (available in Joyner E. 102),

•relevant work samples (i.e. scholarly papers, short films, news packages, press clippings, creative portfolio),

•and a 500-word essay detailing your future career plans and interest in the communication field.

School of Communication, but which communication students can apply for:

1) James M. Cox Scholarship

2) Freedom Forum/NCAA Sports Journalism Scholarship program

Through a $359,000 gift from The Freedom Forum, the NCAA is in its 17th year of offering a scholarship program for sports journalism students. This program is designed specifically to assist future sports journalists, while promoting quality sports journalism education at the collegiate level. Eight $3,000 scholarships will be awarded for the 2009–10 academic year to outstanding sports journalists. Candidates for these awards include only full time juniors. The deadline is Dec. 12, 2008. 3) The Radio and Television News Directors Association of the Carolinas Scholarship Competition. Deadline is Oct. 1! Click here for a PDF document about the scholarship competition.

4)The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation is now accepting nominations for its Graduate Scholarship Program, one of the largest and most competitive scholarship programs in the country. College seniors at more than 2,000 accredited institutions in America, and alumni who have graduated from those institutions since May 2004, may compete for the scholarships, which can total as much as $50,000 per year for up to six years. The Foundation will award the graduate scholarships in early summer 2009 for use during the 2009-2010 academic year, and will renew each award in subsequent years based on performance.  A panel of national experts will assist the Foundation in selecting scholars. Candidates for the scholarship must be nominated by the faculty representative at their undergraduate institution. 5) The National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) offers several scholarships. www.najh.org

6) WorldNomads.com in conjunction with National Geographic Channel and Gap Adventures is offering the chance to go to Antarctica with on-assignment National Geographic photographer Jason Edwards. The scholarship recipient will photograph the world's most remote wilderness and have their photographs published on the National Geographic Channel website. The winner of the scholarship will be flown to Argentina from their country of residence where they will join an 11 day Antarctic Expedition with Gap Adventures.They will gain invaluable mentoring and hands-on experience in everything from shot set up, technique and composition through to insights into Jason's many years of diverse experience as an award winning photographer.
Applicants for the scholarship must shoot a series of photos (no more than 5) that tell a story about a place they have visited. Photos  should be uploaded to the scholarship group on Flickr (www.flickr.com/groups/worldnomadsscholarship), and they will also be asked to provide 200 words or less on why they should be awarded the World Nomads 2009 Travel Photography Scholarship.
