Winter Workshop 2018

January 2-7, 2018 

A destination for the world’s most promising young musicians, Winter Workshop brings participants from throughout the world to Greenville, NC, to perform and interact with the world’s leading musicians. Winter Workshop 2017 brought 29 participants (chosen from over 350 applicants) from eight countries and leading conservatories worldwide for this focused six-day setting. Winter Workshop culminates in three concerts of different programs.

Faculty Artists and Festival Participants Perform Together in Ensembles

Season IV of Winter Workshop brings musicians from throughout the world to Greenville, NC to collaborate and perform chamber music alongside world-renowned faculty artists in a focused six-day setting. Each festival participant will be in at least one chamber music ensemble that includes faculty artists. Every participant will have at least two chamber music ensembles and will perform in the public concerts at the culmination of the workshop (January 6 and 7). Participants will also have the opportunity to play in master classes and to participate in seminars that are relevant to their life as a musician.

Eligibility
Piano, violin, viola, cello
Ages 18 to 32 for individuals
Preformed ensembles consisting of these instruments may also apply
The age of members of a preformed group must be between 18 and 32 at the application deadline.
Individual applicants may attend 3 years total, but not more than two consecutive years as an individual applicant. 
Preformed ensembles can attend a maximum of two years. 
The maximum number of years a participant can come is 5 (3 individual and 2 as a preformed group). 

Tuition
All participants receive a full scholarship, which covers tuition, room and board. 

Travel Supplement
From within North America - up to 400 USD
From outside North America - up to 800 USD
Cello airfare will also be covered up to the same amounts
To be eligible to receive an international travel supplement, the participant must be currently living in that country and not a student at a North American institution. 

Audition Requirements
Concerti recordings must be accompanied if submitted as audition repertoire. Applicants can choose to send additional recordings to supplement the requirements. 

Violin:
A movement from a Bach solo sonata or partita - Applicants may send multiple movements if they choose.
A piece of the applicant's choice (A movement from a standard concerto, a movement from a major sonata or an equivalent major work are acceptable. If the applicant chooses a duo sonata, it must be performed with piano. Concerto movements must be submitted with orchestral or piano accompaniment.)

Viola:
A movement from a Bach cello suite or a movement from a Bach solo violin sonata or partita - Applicants may send multiple movements if they choose.
A piece of the applicant's choice (A movement from a standard concerto, a movement from a major sonata or an equivalent major work are acceptable. If the applicant chooses a duo sonata, it must be performed with piano. Concerto movements must be submitted with orchestral or piano accompaniment.)

Cello:
A movement from a Bach cello suite - Applicants may send multiple movements if they choose.
A piece of the applicant's choice (A movement from a standard concerto, a movement from a major sonata or an equivalent major work are acceptable. If the applicant chooses a duo sonata, it must be performed with piano. Concerto movements must be submitted with orchestral or piano accompaniment.)

Piano:
A movement from a Classical sonata (Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, or a like composer from this era).
A piece of the applicant's choice (This piece can not be a concerto unless it is accompanied by an orchestra).
(Individual movements suffice for multi-movement works)

Preformed Ensembles:
A movement from a Classical work (Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, or a like composer from this era).
A piece of the ensemble's choice.

To Apply
  1. Complete online application here with links to recordings (audio or video - video is strongly preferred) and pay the $60 application fee.
  2. Submit two letters of recommendation, your c.v./resume and chamber music repertoire list to fourseasons@ecu.edu
  • For preformed ensembles, two letters of recommendation addressing the specific ensemble satisfies this requirement. Please submit your ensemble repertoire list as well as individual chamber music repertoire lists.
  • Applicants are welcome to apply as both individuals and as a preformed ensemble, but must submit two applications.

Additional Information About Winter Workshop 2018
  • Participants are housed with host families
  • Participants can arrive at one of two airports: Greenville, North Carolina (PGV) or Raleigh/Durham, North Carolina (RDU)
  • Transportation to/from RDU/PGV is provided by the Four Seasons Chamber Music Festival
  • Events take place at A.J. Fletcher Music Center on the campus of East Carolina University in Greenville, NC
  • Participants arrive on January 1st and depart January 8th
