An acceptable level of performance is determined through a personal audition on the major applied instrument, theory/musicianship diagnostic exam, and personal interview. East Carolina's School of Music is a major music school that is part of a research university that offers students a professional music degree with the benefit of a broad, liberal arts education.
All East Carolina students must meet the foundations curriculum guidelines. These courses equal one-third of a music student's undergraduate curriculum and include English, social sciences, humanities and fine arts, science, mathematics, and health and physical education.
The bachelor of music degree requires a common core of music courses. These courses are designed to develop your technical and musical abilities and include music theory, music history, ear training, piano, orchestration, conducting, applied music, and performing groups. You must present a minimum of a half recital on your major instrument.
At the end of the second year of music study, a student is evaluated on applied and academic performance to determine the eligibility to continue studying in the declared major. (visit the Academic Programs page).
