Bill Reinhart (BM '77, Music Education) reads Tones (our semi-annual newsletter). A few issues ago, we reported that the A. J. Fletcher Foundation board planned to phase out their annual scholarship gifts in order to redirect their philanthropic interests. Tones asked for help to survive the loss, and Mr. Reinhart responded by funding several flagship scholarships.

But the process of helping his alma mater got him thinking about the other 2,600 alumni. How many give to the School of Music?

Our alumni aren't our largest group of donors," says Cindy Kittrell, director of development. "Many of our gifts come from patrons who love the arts and aren't necessarily tied to East Carolina University."

Enter the School of Music Faculty Emeriti Scholarship Challenge. The Reinhart Foundation has approved a challenge grant to the School of Music. Our challenge is to encourage the participation of a significant number of alumni (although everyone is welcome to participate) to fund an endowed scholarship honoring emeriti (click to view emeriti listing).

The terms? Gifts will be matched, dollar-for-dollar, up to $10,000. No gift counted in the challenge may exceed $1,000. Donations shall be new money, not payment on existing pledges. Annual and previous donors may participate with funds given in excess of established and/or pledged giving. Funds must build a School of Music endowment.

Our terms for you? Gifts of $10 and more will be acknowledged with a letter for tax purposes. Gifts of $100 or more entitle the donor to recognize a Faculty Emeritus on a plaque to be mounted in Fletcher Music Center. The plaque, to be created at the conclusion of the challenge, will note that the School of Music Faculty Emeriti Scholarship is supported in part by you in honor of an emeritus of your choosing.

So as to meet our goal of $10,000 and receive the maximum match, we need all 2,600 alumni to send us a check for $3.85 each. If a quarter of our alumni responded with a gift of $15.39 each, we'd also reach our goal. Even if one sixty-fourth of our alumni gave a gift of $250 each, we'd double our money and nearly endow a scholarship. No matter what your ability, please consider a financial gift at any level to assist in this endeavor.

Also note that the Reinhart Foundation encourages other major donors to consider adding matching dollars to this challenge.
