(Vocal Studies, soprano)
Soprano Nicole Franklin joined the ECU Voice Faculty in 2016, where she teaches applied studio voice and graduate vocal pedagogy and is an active member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing. Her students have participated in young artist programs all over the world, pursued advanced degrees at prestigious schools of music across the U.S., and have won prizes at State and Regional NATS (North Carolina and Texas), The Edward Baird Singer of the Year, and the Orpheus National Vocal Competition. Ms. Franklin is also active as an adjudicator, serving as such for State and Regional NATS, Music Teachers National Association, Texas State UIL Solo and Ensemble, and the Texas State University Aria and Concerto Competition.
As a performer, Nicole has appeared in roles such as Tytania in A Midsummer Night's Dream, Norina in Don Pasquale, Laetitia in The Old Maid and the Thief, Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro and Gretel in Hansel and Gretel, Nella in Gianni Schicchi, Pamina in Die Zauberflöte, Lightfoot in Cold Sassy Tree, Sylvia in L'isola Disabitata, and Lauretta in Puccini's Gianni Schicchi. Franklin sings the role of Laetitia on the first professional recording of Menotti's The Old Maid and the Thief with Lone Spring Arts in Dallas, Texas. The CD was released in December 2007 under the Albany label. She has sung with New Jersey Concert Opera, Amarillo Opera, The Living Opera, Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Helios Ensemble, NY Philomusica, Mid-Columbia Symphony, the Greenville Choral Society and Orchestra, the Choral Society of Durham, the Bach Choir and Orchestra at Duke Chapel, the Houston Masterworks Chorus and Orchestra, the Brazos Valley Chorale, the Texas Medical Center Orchestra, and the Uintah Basin Orchestra and Chorus.
Nicole has done concert work including Mendelssohn's Elijah, and Mozart's Great Mass in C minor, in which the Dallas Morning News hailed her as "superb", with a "bright" and "tangy" sound. She has also appeared as a soloist in Handel’s Messiah, Mozart's Requiem, Rutter's Requiem, Bach’s Johannes-Passion, Vaughan Williams’ Dona Nobis Pacem and his Hodie, Haydn's Lord Nelson Mass and his Theresienmesse, Fauré’s Requiem, Dvořák’s Stabat Mater, Dubois' Seven Last Words of Christ, O’Reagan’s The Ecstasies Above, Vivaldi’s Gloria and his Beatus vir, and Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 “Resurrection. Ms. Franklin also sang as the soprano soloist with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and Chorus in their Christmas celebration, Hope.
Future engagements include Eric Whitacre’s Good Night Moon, Gilmore’s Five Folks Songs for Soprano and Band, Dave Brubeck’s La Fiesta de la Posda, Handel’s Messiah, and Mahler’s Wir geniessen die himmlischen Freuden.
Franklin holds degrees in vocal performance from Baylor University and The Shepherd School of Music at Rice University
