The Suzuki Pedagogy Program at the East Carolina University School of Music is directed and taught by Joanne Bath, the Hardy Distinguished Professor of Suzuki Pedagogy. In 1964 Joanne Bath became one of the first violin teachers in the United States to become part of the Suzuki approach to music teaching. She has maintained a private violin studio in Greenville NC for 42 years, teaching Pre-Pre Twinkle classes through the 10 Suzuki books and the major advanced repertoire. Many of her students have become major competition and award winning violinists, and many have become professional musicians.
Graduates of the Suzuki Pedagogy Program are highly sought after for prestigious jobs throughout the United States and abroad. While most of the students are Masters degree candidates, undergraduates are able to take the courses at the junior level, with the professor's approval. A certificate in Suzuki Pedagogy is available for those who meet the standards of the National Association of Schools of Music and requires a BM in music or equivalent.
Special opportunities in the Hardy Suzuki Pedagogy Program include teaching in school out-reach programs sponsored by the Pedagogy Program, where pre-K four year olds through third graders are taught, and in the Senior Suzuki outreach offerings; teaching groups at the Suzuki Saturdays sponsored by the Greenville Suzuki Association; teaching privately and participating with and observing the 42 Suzuki violin and viola teachers in the Greenville Suzuki Association; and working with Joanne Bath on events such as festivals, workshops and the North Carolina Suzuki Institute, a summer program held yearly at ECU.
Because of the endowment from Dr. Ira Hardy and gifts from the Greenville area, generous Graduate Assistantships are available.
