Guitar Studies @ ECU:
Undergraduate Audition Requirements
Entering freshman guitarists should have at least one year of study on the classical guitar. They should be familiar with basic right hand techniques and should be able to read music on the guitar up to seventh position. Suggested audition pieces are examples of what might be expected. These are minimum requirements for entrance. Students may audition with more advanced repertoire than that listed below.

Level III (Freshman Level for Music Education, Music Therapy, Music Composition)*

  • Ferdinand Carulli ,Waltz, p.66 Classic Guitar Technique, Aaron Shearer
  • Ferdinand Carulli, Waltz and Three Variations, p. 70, Classic Guitar Technique, Aaron Shearer
  • Mauro Giuliani, Allegro, p. 76 Classic Guitar Technique, Aaron Shearer
  • Leo Brouwer, Etudes 1-5


Level III
(Freshman Level for Guitar Performance)

Any two etudes from the following:
  • Matteo Carcassi, 25 Melodious and Progressive Etudes, Opus 60(1-10)
  • Fernando Sor, Twenty Studies(edited by Segovia)(1-10)
  • Leo Brouwer, Etudes Simples, (6-20)
and

Repertoire, one piece from the following:
  • J.S. Bach, Prelude in D minor, BWV999
  • Bach, Bouree in E minor, BWV 996
  • Francisco Tarrega, Lagrima, Adelita
  • Manuel Ponce, 12 Preludes(ed. Segovia), any
  • Heitor Villa-Lobos, Preludes 1 and 4
  • Luis Milan, 6 Pavanas, any
Graduate Audition Requirements
Twenty minutes of music from the following categories:

  • A suite by J. S. Bach, including a prelude, courante, or gigue
  • A sonata movement or theme and variations by Sor, Aguado or Giuliani
  • Any Villa-Lobos Etude
  • A work by Ponce, Barrios, Brouwer, Lauro, Merlin or another Latin American composer
  • A work by Albeniz, Turina, Torroba, Rodrigo, or other Spanish composer
  • A work by an American or European composer 20th or 21st century
